Founding
Friends Haviland Academy and the 1917 Beginning
Barclay College traces its beginnings to 1917 when Friends Haviland Academy founded the Kansas Central Bible Training School in a new building near the academy. The academy opened in 1892 as the first secondary school in Kiowa County, Kansas. Born from a desire for strong evangelistic emphasis, the college became a center for training and preparing pastors and missionaries.
The Cornerstone
Built on a foundation of biblical authority, the college began as a vision to train leaders for the church and the world.
Friends Bible College
A two-year junior college course was added in 1925, and in 1930 the name changed to Friends Bible College to reflect the institution's growing mission.
Growth
Four-Year Institution and the Barclay Name
By 1968, supporters determined the college would best be served by emphasizing a four-year institution. The academy and junior college programs were closed, and the college undertook a vigorous effort to secure faculty and facilities. In spring 1990, the college adopted its current name in honor of Robert Barclay, the first Quaker theologian.
1975 Full Accreditation
The college received full accreditation from the American Association of Bible Colleges, now the Association for Biblical Higher Education.
2008 Digital Leap
Launched online degree programs, bringing the Barclay mission to students regardless of their location.
2011 Graduate School
Established the School of Graduate Studies to provide advanced training for seasoned leaders.
Recent Momentum
Accreditation, Graduate Studies, and Ross-Ellis
The online program began in fall 2008 with Christian Leadership and Psychology. In 2011, the Board established the Barclay College School of Graduate Studies. In 2018, Barclay received accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission, and the Ross-Ellis Center for Arts and Ministry was completed as an $8.5 million facility serving fine arts, ministry, and education.
