Manhattan, KS – Barclay College Bears Volleyball traveled to MCCC leading and #6th ranked (NCCAA) Manhattan Christian College on Tuesday, Oct. 9th.
As the match began, the Bears fought hard defensively to counter the Crusaders top-notch front row hitters. They proved to be a little too much as the Crusaders took the first set 25-11. In the second set, the Bears once again found themselves in the thick of things with the score 8-10 due to some strong blocking. The Bears, however, were unable to stop a stretch of stellar Crusader serving to lose the second set as well, 12-25. Unfortunately, the Bears serve receive continued to struggle in the third set, and the Crusaders closed out the match 25-9.
The Bears (3-12) close out their regular season with two MCCC matches this coming weekend at Hockett Auditorium in Haviland, KS. On Friday, October 12th St. Louis Christian (Florissant, MO) will be in town for a match at 7:00 PM CST and then Central Christian College of the Bible (Moberly, MO) will hook up with the Bears at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 13th.
McPherson, KS – On Tuesday, October 2nd, Bears Volleyball made the short commute to McPherson, KS to take on the NAIA Tigers of Central Christian College.
The Bears started out very slow and were unable to get into a grow before the Tigers ran away with a 25-12 first set victory. In the second set, however, the Bears were ready to play and took an early lead amidst some long rallies. Eventually the Tigers capitalized on some free balls and took the second set as well, 25-19. Midway through the third set, the Bears found themselves down 13-6 before they made a huge run to pull within 15-17 behind some hard serving and kills. Once again the Tigers proved to be a little too much and finished off the match by winning the third set 25-19.
Junior Sarah Sullivan (San Antonio, TX) and Sophomore Megan Eby (Arlington, KS) led the Bears with eight kills apiece. Sophomore Dani Gressel (New Haven, KS) and Freshman Courtney Gillaspy (Medina, TX) had 12 digs each to help the Bears defensively.
The Bears (3-11, 1-5) will take this weekend off and will be back in action against MCCC first place and nationally ranked Manhattan Christian on Tuesday, October 9th.
Joplin, MO – With the MCCC Tournament three weeks away, the Bears traveled to Ozark Christian College for an attempt to improve their seeding. However, their second meeting with the Ambassadors ended in the same fashion as their first, with a straight set loss.
“Defensively we were slow on our feet. Made too many unforced errors at the net and you just can’t do that against a good team like Ozark,” said Head Coach Shari Bryan.
Ozark Christian came out in the first set like a top caliber team that they are and won the set 25-13. In the second set, behind superb serving, the Bears went stride for stride with the Ambassadors but fell just short, losing the set 19-25. The third set was similar to the first with the Ambassadors winning 25-14 to end the match.
The Bears (3-10, 1-5) play at NAIA Central Christian College (McPherson, KS) at 7:00 PM CST before they take a week off and then play at Manhattan Christian College (Manhattan, KS) on October 9th.
Moore, OK – On Tuesday, September 25th, the Barclay College Bears Volleyball team traveled to Hillsdale Free Will Baptist for a rematch against the Saints. The Bears had been beat earlier in the month by the Saints and were looking for a win against the NCCAA Southwest Region competitor. As the first set began, the Bears jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead before the Saints bounced back with strong serving to pull it close and eventually take the set 25-19. The Saints continued with their strong serving to win the second set as well, 25-11. The third set was close throughout with both teams fighting hard for the win. With the help of Sophomore Megan Eby’s (Arlington, WA) thee aces, the Bears hung tough with the Saints, but the Saints were able to finish out the set 25-21. The Bears were led by Junior Sarah Sullivan (San Antonio, TX) and Eby with 6 kills a piece. Sophomore Dani Gressel (South Haven, KS) pitched in with 8 digs. While Sophomore setter Kalyn Switzer (Weatherford, OK) had 11 assists. The Bears (3-9, 1-4) will be in action again Friday night against MCCC rival Ozark Christian in Joplin, MO at 7:00 PM CST.
Ankeny, IA – Bears Volleyball made the trek to Faith Baptist Bible College on Friday night to battle the MCCC second place Eagles and came up short.
Senior Katie Cruse (San Dimas, CA) concluded, “Though we played a great team and we played well, we were unable to pull this game off.”
Action was back and forth throughout the match with multiple long rallies, good attacking and hustle from both sides, however, the Bears were unable to be near as consistent as the Eagles and dropped the match 13-25, 17-25, and 19-25.
BC Bears Volleyball (3-8, 1-4) will play NCCAA Southwest Regional Opponent Hillsdale Free Will Baptist in Moore, OK at 6:00 PM CST. In the Bears first meeting with the Saints, the Bears lost at home in straight sets.
Haviland, KS – Coming off a tough weekend, Barclay College Bears Volleyball was looking to get back on track with an upset over NAIA Southwestern Christian College (Bethany, OK).
The Eagles of Southwestern Christian were able to overcome a shaky first few points and run away with the first set 25-14, but the Bears stormed back in the second set 25-15. In the pivotal third set, the Eagles reestablished themselves with strong serving and hitting to win 25-12. It was back and forth action in the fourth set before the Eagles created a gap late in the set to win 25-20.
Defensively leading the way for the Bears was libero Sophomore Dani Gressel (South Haven, KS) with 12 digs. Offensively, Junior Sarah Sullivan (San Antonio, TX) had 15 kills and Sophomore Megan Eby (Arlington, WA) had three aces.
This weekend the Bears (3-7, 1-3) travel to Ankeny, IA on Friday, September 21st for an MCCC match against Faith Baptist Bible College at 7:00 PM CST.
Haviland, KS – Midwest Christian College Conference (MCCC) volleyball play is well under way and the Bears are finding it to be tough sledding. This weekend the Bears faced off against Calvary Bible College (Kansas City, MO) and Ozark Christian College (Joplin, MO).
Calvary Bible College (Kansas City, MO) came to Hockett Auditorium on Friday evening and were able to find revenge after losing to the Bears in straight sets one week prior. The opening set was dominated by the Bears 25-12 but the Warriors of Calvary Bible stormed back to win three sets in a row, 24-26, 19-25, and 15-25.
On Saturday afternoon, the Ambassadors of Ozark Christian won in straight sets 16-25, 13-25, and 22-25, but with plenty of scares from the Bears. It took a 10-0 run by the Ambassadors to pull away mid-way through the first set and then in the third set, the Bears built a 22-17 lead before allowing Ozark Christian to score eight in a row to close out the match.
The Bears (3-6, 1-3) will host NAIA Southwestern Christian College (Bethany, OK) on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM CST.
Haviland, KS – MCCC powerhouse Manhattan Christian College (Manhattan, KS) came to Barclay College on Tuesday and handed the Bears their first conference loss of the year.
The Crusaders came out of the gates quickly, established a lead and the Bears were unable to match their play. After losing the first set 10-25 and the second set 9-25, the Bears began to get some touches on the front line and slow down the Crusaders attack. However, the Crusader were a little too much to handle this night and took the third set 16-25 for a straight sets victory over the Bears.
Freshman Lauren Wells (Halstead, KS) had nine digs and two aces to lead the Bears while Sophomore Kalyn Switzer (Weatherford, OK) contributed another six digs to lead the Bears defensive attack.
Barclay College Volleyball (3-4, 1-1) will play a pair of conference matches over the weekend. They will go head to head with Calvary Bible College (Kansas City, MO) on Friday, September 14th at 5:00 PM CST and Saturday, September 15th they will be up against Ozark Christian College (Joplin, MO) at 1:00 PM.
Kansas City, MO – The Barclay College Volleyball team competed in a Saturday triangular against Emmaus Bible College (Dubuque, IA) and MCCC opponent Calvary Bible College (Kansas City, MO), and walked away with a split.
The Warriors of Calvary Bible College were first up for the Bears and the first conference match of the season as well. The Bears waisted no time establishing themselves as the aggressor winning the opening set 25-19. In the second set, down four half way through the set, the Bears found a way to not only take that set 25-22 but carry the momentum into the third and win in straight sets, 25-20.
“Our front row players stepped up and played really well. It allowed us to be on the offensive for most of the morning, ” commented Head Coach Shari Bryan. Junior Sarah Sullivan (San Antonio, TX) led the way with 14 kills while middle blocker Sophomore Megan Eby (Arlington, WA), had three blocks and six kills.
Immediately following the victory over Calvary Bible, the Bears were back at it against the Emmaus Bible College Eagles. The Eagles were able to capitalize on the Bears fatigued legs in opening set, winning 25-15. However, in the second set with the match tied at 23 all, the Bears found themselves on the wrong side of a questionable call and dropped the set 23-25. Even though the Bears were able to bounce back and take the third set 25-17, the Eagles controlled the fourth set winning 25-11 going away. Once again Eby and Sullivan led the way with 11 and 10 kills. Freshman Lauren Wells (Halstead, KS) had 13 digs and Sophomore Kalyn Switzer (Weatherford, OK) had 22 assists.
Next up for the Bears (3-3, 1-0) is a date with NCCAA #3 ranked Manhattan Christian College (Manhattan, KS). The MCCC match is scheduled for Tuesday, September 11 at 7:00 PM CST.
Haviland, KS – The Saints from Hillsdale Freewill Baptist College (Moore, OK) came to Hockett Auditorium with something to prove. Both of last year’s volleyball matches with the Saints went to five sets. However, the Bears came out flat this time around and were unable to come out on top, losing in straight sets.
In this NCCAA Southwest Region match-up, the Bears found themselves playing mostly defenses and unable to recover from early holes in the first two sets, losing 15-25 and 12-25. In the third set, they made some adjustments and were able to dig deep to give themselves an opportunity to win the third before falling short, 22-25. The Bears were led by Jr. Sarah Sullivan (San Antonio, TX) with 7 kills and 5 kills by So. Megan Eby (Arlington, WA). Setter So. Kalyn Switzer (Weatherford, OK) had 18 assits while Fr. Courtney Gillaspy (Medina, TX) had 91% of her passes on target and Lauren Wells (Halstead, KS) chipped in 13 digs.
Next up for the Bears is a triangular in Kansas City, MO at Calvary Bible College. They will play host Calvary at 10:00 AM CST and Emmaus Bible College (Dubuque, IA) at 12:00 PM on Saturday, September 8th.
