We are thrilled to announce that Derek Brown will be joining the faculty of Barclay College. Derek will be the Professor of Pastoral Ministry and Chaplain, as well as holding the department chair. In these roles, Derek will be teaching classes and ministering to the student body through both corporate worship in Chapel and pastoral care through counseling and mentoring students.

An alumnus of Barclay College, Derek graduated with a BA in Theology. He then went on to pastor at Macksville Christian Church, where he as been for the last three years. During this time, he earned his Masters in Religion from Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary. The college also had the pleasure of having Derek serve as both an adjunct instructor and the part-time Director of Chapel Ministries last year. This year Derek has also applied to enter into the Ph.D. program at Johnson University, and if accepted, will be able to complete his doctoral work without interrupting his tenure at Barclay.

Derek is married to Jessica (Huffman) Brown, also an alumnus of Barclay College. They have been married for three years, and are currently expecting twins in November! In addition, they are the proud parents of a Chihuahua (Princess) and a Boston Terrier (Charlie). They have recently purchased a house in Haviland and
are excited to move into the community. Said Derek, “Barclay was such a influential part, not only of my pastoral education, but also my spiritual formation. It is my hope that my humble efforts can help impact students in the same way.” Welcome back Derek! We are excited for you to join the Barclay team!

From July 16th to August 5th Barclay College Senior Artaya Climes will be spending three weeks in London and Belgium with Sportquest, a sports ministry located out of Indianapolis, Indiana. They will be putting on sports camps for high school and college age kids in the surrounding areas. Climes is entering her Senior season on the Lady Bears basketball team.

Climes reflected about this opportunity, “it has always been my dream to play basketball overseas.  I just didn’t know what that would look like. In March I applied. I know I’m the biggest procrastinator in the world, but it wasn’t until then that I felt like that was what I am suppose to be doing over the summer. What really made we want to go on the trip is I want to see what God is going to do with me. I have played basketball all my life. I am about to enter my senior year of college and that is usually the time where basketball is over.  If traveling the world and using basketball as a platform to get Jesus to people is the way He wants me to use it, then I am all for it. I just want to do more than play basketball.”

She also said, “Sportquest has a saying “Play with a Purpose” and that is all I want to do. I want to play basketball in such a way that it touches people’s lives. That feeling or drive or whatever you want to call it is what made me want to go. I hope that lives are changed mine to be included. I am really excited and humbled by this opportunity. I can’t wait to see what God does over this summer.”

As we take a look at the potential for the upcoming season, the excitement starts to build for a number of different reasons:

·         A solid core group of players are returning.

·         We have a talented class of recruits.

·         New alumni recruiting streams are forming.

·         Barclay has been accepted into the NCCAA Div. II – providing a higher level of competition and greater opportunities to expand our program.

·         Coach Steve has completed the USSF National D coaches training, and coach Kevin has completed the USSF National E coaches training and licensing.

·         Night games are coming to Haviland, KS.

On July 23, 25, 27, and 28 there will be a soccer camp in Wichita, KS featuring Chico Borja formerly of the Wichita Wings.  There is a special discount for any Barclay player who would like to attend (See coaches Steve or Kevin for details).

Soccer players are to report to campus for Training Camp on August 10 by 1:00 PM.  A sports physical is required to play.  If you have not received a sports physical, a time will be scheduled for our team at the Kiowa County Hospital – cost is typically under $20.
